The thatch area is between the turf surface and the soil. Excessively thatched area may dry out quickly, and insects and diseases may find a favorable environment there. Excess thatch will decrease tolerance to heat, cold and drought.

The grass becomes stunted because it does not have enough photosynthetic area remaining after mowing.
