Answer to Question 1

Scalping can be prevented by not lowering the height of cut more than 1/3 of the height of the turf and never cutting off more than 1/3 the height of the leaves.

Answer to Question 2

Fungi are a major cause of localized dry spots. When the fungi colonize soil, they cause it to resist wetting resulting in the turf becoming desiccated.
