MSH might be important for nerve growth and development in humans. Animals use MSH to change skin color as part of protective camouflage, but it does not have this effect in humans. Lipotropins stimulate fat mobilization. Endorphins and enkephalins are hormones that block the perception of pain.

Safety precautions should be instituted if CNS effects occur but are not needed for every drug as soon as it is initiated. Protecting these patients from exposure to infection and injury is a very important aspect of their nursing care because older patients are naturally somewhat immunosuppressed because of age.
