For a binomial distribution with n =100, and p = 0.05, does the normal distribution provide a reasonable approximation? Use the rule of thumb for normal approximation to the binomial distribution.

Question 2

For a binomial distribution with n =10, and p = 0.2, does the normal distribution provide a reasonable approximation? Use the rule of thumb for normal approximation to the binomial distribution.

Answer to Question 1

Since np = 5 >= 5 and nq = 95 > 5, the normal approximation to the binomial distribution is appropriate in this case.

Answer to Question 2

Since np = 2 < 5 and nq = 8 > 5, the normal approximation to the binomial distribution is not appropriate in this case.
