Matter from an accretion disk spirals inward toward the event horizon of the supermassive black hole. This matter accelerates close to the speed of light, and the high speed and temperature converts about 20 of the infalling matter into high energy radiation that ionizes the surrounding regions. The magnetic fields also focus the jets of outflowing hot gas perpendicular to the accretion disk.
