Inferring stellar lifetimes: Scientists must often draw on a variety of concepts to develop new understanding. Take, for example, the inferred lifetimes of stars.

What two properties must be precisely measured in order to estimate the lifetime? Outline the set of observations that must be made in order to determine those properties. Then discuss the fundamental physics that must be understood to relate these to the rate at which hydrogen is converted to helium in the stellar core, and to determine the amount of hydrogen available in the core.

Question 2

Jupiter and the other gas giants formed close to the sun and migrated outward.

Indicate whether the statement is true or false

Answer to Question 1

Should include description of the measurements of apparent brightness and distance to determine luminosity, and observations of eclipsing binaries to determine stellar masses. Then the answer should reference the known energy release from each set of four hydrogen nuclei converted to helium, and the importance of understanding the behavior of gases to predict how much of the star's mass is in the high pressure / high temperature core.

Answer to Question 2

FALSE

The lipid bilayer is made of phospholipids. They are arranged in a double layer because one of their ends is attracted to water while the other is repelled by water.

Looking at the sun may not only cause headache and distort your vision temporarily, but it can also cause permanent eye damage. Any exposure to sunlight adds to the cumulative effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on your eyes. UV exposure has been linked to eye disorders such as macular degeneration, solar retinitis, and corneal dystrophies.

Did you know?

Since 1988, the CDC has reported a 99% reduction in bacterial meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, due to the introduction of the vaccine against it.

Did you know?

Vaccines cause herd immunity. If the majority of people in a community have been vaccinated against a disease, an unvaccinated person is less likely to get the disease since others are less likely to become sick from it and spread the disease.

Did you know?

Most childhood vaccines are 90–99% effective in preventing disease. Side effects are rarely serious.
