Define the following: hutspot, rsti, schnitzel, muesli, and rijsttafel.

Dennis' mother fixes him a peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwich for his school lunch. She freezes it, takes it out, and puts it in his lunch box. Describe what the sandwich is like by lunch time and what caused this to happen.

Answer to Question 1

Hutspothearty beef and vegetable stew from the Netherlands; after cooking, the vegetables are served mashed with the sliced beef.

RstiSwiss dish of parboiled grated potatoes sauted in butter and browned on both sides.

Schnitzelthin cutlet of veal or another meat that is dipped in a batter prior to cooking.

Mueslibreakfast cereal of toasted oats, nuts, and dried apples.

Rijsttafelrice table: a multi-course meal of hot and spicy food alongside mild food, resulting from the relationship of Indonesia with the Dutch East India Company.

Answer to Question 2

The bread on one side is soggy, and there may be some extra fat where the mayonnaise has separated. The emulsion in the mayonnaise broke during freezing. Ice crystals formed as the water froze. This broke the emulsion and the water and fat separated.
