The reaction shown in Equation PE 27.4 is known as the Stobbe condensation. Propose a mechanism for the reaction, accounting for the fact that the product has one ester group and one carboxylate function.

Hint: Examine the mechanism outlined in Figure E27.3 and determine if there is some point at which the alkoxide could react differently than is shown in the figure.
