Harvard was instrumental in developing professionalism among the law students. Harvard instituted stricter requirements, entrance exams, established a three-year program, and used actual cases in the classroom that promoted spirited arguments.

Today there are 1.1 million licensed attorneys, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers boasts 13,000 members and 35,000 additional affiliated members.
