Answer to Question 1

The teacher should understand that early access to health care for ill children is perhaps the major issue for cultural competence. This may be especially true for recent immigrants. Members of certain cultures may have had little access to health care. Parents of these children may not understand the health care system or may not come from countries where health care was readily available and used regularly. Connecting these families to a medical home may be especially crucial to help the child with a chronic health condition.

Answer to Question 2

If the child who is in care has a chronic health condition, the medical home would help the family to make sure that the child has access to and coordinate specialty care for the child's particular health issues. This would include partnering with educational settings and giving the family support. The focus of the medical home is the individual child. All dealings with the family and the educational representative should involve mutual respect and trust to help best meet the child's needs. A medical home should also take into account the cultural practices and religious beliefs of the family.
