Benzodiazepines enhance GABA inhibition and are used during detoxification to reduce withdrawal symptoms. Once detoxified, maintenance treatment could use antabuse (blocks acetaldehyde metabolism leading to illness if the patient drinks alcohol), naltrexone (opioid antagonist), or acamprosate (structural similarity to GABA).
