Answer to Question 1

Some therapists believe that a post-traumatic model of dissociative identity disorder best accounts for the phenomenon. According to this position, dissociative identity disorder occurs following a trauma event and is an attempt to compartmentalize responses to the trauma. Compartmentalizatio n results in the alters, or separate personalities. Even if the patient is unaware of the different behaviors that are presented, they are indicative of the possible presence of alters; some therapists report that these emerge only after repeated requests by the therapist. It has been suggested that these alters appear in response to therapist demands. Thus, they are iatrogenic in that the phenomenon is caused by the therapist. The sociocultural model posits that the disorder is an iatrogenic one emerging from suggestion and from media cues, from therapists, and from personal experiences and observations of others who have enacted multiple personalities. These experiences and cues are maintained through social reinforcement within therapeutic settings.
