Sexually transmitted infections have historically been viewed as symbols of corrupt sexuality. Gender disparities exist, as women are more likely to be asymptomatic. Racial disparities exist as well, as African American communities have higher rates of STIs than other groups in the United States. Rates of STIs have been increasing in men who have sex with men.
