The ParaGard IUD worked by causing a sterile inflammation inside the uterus, which prevents fertilization by affecting sperm function. Because it contains a progestin, the Mirena IUD works similarly to progestin-only forms of contraception by thickening cervical mucus, suppressing the endometrium, and inhibiting sperm survival.
