Answer to Question 1

Index fossils are widespread geographically and are limited to a short span of geologic time. Rock formations may not contain a single index fossil but may instead contain a particular group of fossils that is useful for dating the layerthis is called a fossil assemblage.

Answer to Question 2

The goal of correlation is to match up rocks from one locality to another to be able to see and interpret large enrironments of deposition from Earth's past.
