Description: Refers to the tightly packed homogenous cluster of induced pluripotent cells. Undifferentiated embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells grow in colonies in vitro. As the pluripotent cells begin to differentiate, the cells will no longer form colonies and will instead appear flattened. The emergence of colonies is one of the first signs that somatic cells have been successfully reprogrammed into iPS cells.
