Overview of gas exchange between the environment, blood, and cells.

Description: In vertebrates, oxygen diffuses from the environment across the cells of a respiratory organ into the blood. From there, oxygen diffuses into tissue cells, where it is used during the formation of ATP. Cells generate carbon dioxide as a waste product, which diffuses out of cells and into blood, and then across the respiratory organ into the environment. In a vertebrate lung, the “external environment” is really the air that fills the lungs.
