Differences in oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curves under different physiological conditions and am
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: (a) Increasing or decreasing the amounts of carbon dioxide or hydrogen ions (acid), or the temperature of the blood, shift the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve. Actively metabolic tissues generate these products. By shifting the curve, different tissues obtain oxygen from hemoglobin in proportion to their metabolic needs. (b) Oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curves for three mammals with low (elephant), moderate (human), or high (mouse) relative metabolic rates.
