Description: A gallstone in the cystic duct causes bile to back up into the gallbladder. A gallstone in the proximal common bile duct causes bile to back up into the gallbladder and liver. A gallstone in the distal common bile duct keeps pancreatic digestive enzymes from entering the duodenum.
