| Description: An embolus (blood clot or fat globule) in a pulmonary artery blocks the flow of blood to the lung. The blood never reaches the alveoli to pick up oxygen. This lowers the overall oxygen content of the blood in the body. The alveoli collapse in that area of the lung.
