| Description: The pharynx can be examined by holding the tongue with a piece of gauze and pulling it forward. The palatine tonsils can be seen on either side of the oropharynx. A laryngeal mirror can visualize the vocal cords in the larynx. The image of the vocal cords as reflected in the mirror is upside down when compared to the actual position of the vocal cords. The laryngeal mirror can be turned upward to examine the nasopharynx.
