Description: The physician is using an otoscope to examine this patient’s left external auditory canal and tympanic membrane. Before each use, a disposable black plastic tip (speculum) is placed over the part of the otoscope that enters the ear. For patients from 3 years old to adult, the physician gently pulls the helix backward and upward to straighten the external auditory canal and visualize the tympanic membrane. In infants younger than 3, the helix is pulled backward and downward to straighten the external auditory canal.
