| Description: The radiopharmaceutical drug technetium-99m outlines the size and shape of the thyroid gland. At the same time, the radiopharmaceutical drug iodine-123 is taken up by the thyroid gland cells and shows their rate of metabolism. This scan shows a blue “cold spot” in the right lower lobe of the thyroid gland where the cells are not taking up iodine. This could be a cyst or a cancerous tumor. (Remember, the patient’s right side is on your left side when you view the scan image.)
