Description: The tundra climate is typically cold and dry. However, the tundra usually doesn't get quite as cold in the winter or quite as warm in the summer as does the boreal forest to the south. A defining characteristic of the northern tundra is short summers (fig. 2.11). Precipitation on the tundra varies from less than 200 mm to a little over 600 mm. Still, because average annual temperatures are so low, precipitation exceeds evaporation. As a consequence, the short summers are soggy and the tundra landscape is filled with ponds and streams.
