Three Types of Lunar Eclipses
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: People on the nighttime side of the Earth see a lunar eclipse when the Moon moves through the Earth’s shadow. The umbra is the darkest part of the shadow. In the penumbra, only part of the Sun is covered by the Earth.  The inset shows the various lunar eclipses that occur, depending on the Moon’s path through Earth’s shadow.
