Description: a) This view of the summit of Olympus Mons is based on
a mosaic of six pictures taken by one of the
Viking orbiters. The caldera consists of overlapping, volcanic
craters and measures about 70 km across. The volcano is
wreathed in mid-morning clouds brought upslope by cool air
currents. The cloud tops are about 8 km below the volcano’s
peak.
