Description: a) This view of the summit of Olympus Mons is based on a mosaic of six pictures taken by one of the Viking orbiters. The caldera consists of overlapping, volcanic craters and measures about 70 km across. The volcano is wreathed in mid-morning clouds brought upslope by cool air currents. The cloud tops are about 8 km below the volcano’s peak.
