Description: A central problem faced by detritivores is that dead plants are rich in carbon and energy but very poor in nitrogen. In other words, dead logs are great for the campfire, but not for serving as dinner. Dead plant litter is in fact of lower “quality†(where quality refers to N content) than living plants (fig. 7., which are themselves low in N relative to the organisms that feed upon them.
