Description: A similar group of organisms, though less well known and studied, are the mixotrophs. Mixotrophic species are able to gain energy both from photosynthesis and from consuming organic or inorganic compounds. A variety of algae, bacteria, and protest species are mixotrophs. One of the best examples of mixotrophy in the wild comes from Quebec. David Bird and Jacob Kalff, both from McGill University, determined that four common species of the lake alga, Dinobryon.
