Description: This is a typical differential stain, called a Gram stain. The spherical purples cells are Staphylococcus aureus. They are Gram positive cells. They retain the primary stain, crystal violet. The pink bacillus cells are E. coli. They are Gram negative cells. E. coli loses the primary stain and retain the counterstain, safranin.
