Description: Hydrogen peroxide is a toxic form of oxygen. Only cells that produce catalase can break it down into gaseous oxygen and water. To test for this, we place a smear of our specimen on a slide and then add a drop of hydrogen peroxide on the smear. The bubbles on the left are created by the release of the gaseous oxygen. That species is positive for catalase production. The one on the right is negative.
