A sandbar downstream of Glen Canyon Dam,gained area and volume after an experimental flood in 1996. Sediment “starved” floodplains and channels downstream from dams can result because sediment is trapped behind dams unless water and sediment are released from dams periodically. Such controlled floods replenish some fertility to the floodplains downstream
