Cycles of Sleep and Melatonin Secretion

Cycles of Sleep and Melatonin Secretion
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Normally, melatonin secretion begins in the evening, approximately six hours before the midpoint of sleep. Most people with seasonal affective disorder begin secreting melatonin earlier, showing a phase delay between cycles of melatonin and sleep. A few people with this disorder show a phase advance, with melatonin secretion beginning at a later time. (Based on data from Lewy et al., 2006.)
