Description: (a) When the conditions for long-term potentiation are met, Ca2+ ions enter the dendritic spine through NMDA receptors. The calcium ions activate enzymes in the spine. (b) The activated enzymes cause AMPA receptors to move into the spine. (c) An increased number of AMPA receptors in the postsynaptic membrane strengthens the synapse. (Details of this process are shown in Figure 13.14.)
