Description: This is the first portrait of George Washington, painted by John Gadsby Chapman. Washington’s right hand is inside his vest, a convention later associated with Napoleon; his left hand is behind his back. Perhaps this was to spare the painter of the trouble of rendering hands and fingers, which were always a challenge.
