| Description: Commissioned by Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark traveled northwest from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. They failed to find an all-water route that would connect the Northwest Coast to eastern markets but brought back a wealth of information about the physical and cultural landscape of the region.
