Description: During the 1700s, journeymen and apprentices usually lived in or near their masters’ workshops. Historian Paul Johnson found in Rochester, New York, in 1827, most journeymen continued in this tradition, living near their masters’ shops. But by 1834 the gulf between masters and workers had widened, and journeymen’s homes were scattered throughout Rochester.
