Description: World War I stimulated support for the Nineteenth Amendment, which would extend the right to vote to women. The May 21, 1919, vote in the House of Representatives on the amendment shows that most of the opposing votes came from southern congressmen who believed that woman suffrage would be the first step toward securing the vote for blacks.
