Description: The ER is composed of a network of flattened tubules called cisternae that enclose a continuous ER lumen. The rough ER is studded with ribosomes, while the smooth ER lacks ribosomes. The rough ER is continuous with the outer nuclear membrane. The image on the right is a colorized transmission electron micrograph of an embedded, sectioned portion of a cell.
