The Activation-Synthesis Hypothesis of Dreaming
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: The pons, located in the brain stem, sends excitatory messages through the thalamus to the sensory and emotional areas of the cortex. The images and emotions that arise from this activity are synthesized into the bizarre and often vivid experience of dreaming. Inhibitory signals are also relayed from the pons down the spinal cord, which prevents movement during dreaming.
