Description: Spearman proposed a single, general intelligence that could affect scores on all varieties of tasks, as shown in (a). Later, Thurstone and others argued for separate, unrelated primary mental abilities as shown in (b). The dominant view today incorporates the evidence in favor of both, as shown in (c). It appears that individuals can have large differences in verbal and mathematical skills (separate abilities), although in the general population, they produce high correlations that support the concept of g (Willingham, 2004).
