Emotional Pathways in the Brain

Emotional Pathways in the Brain
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: The amygdala is a key brain structure in the processing of emotion. Neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux has described both “slow” and “fast” pathways of emotional processing. Fast pathways are routed from sensory areas of the brain through the amygdala and directly to the autonomic nervous system for quick action. The slow pathway is routed through the cortex where the situation is processed at a higher level of awareness.
