The Freudian Structure of Personality
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: A popular depiction of how Freud viewed personality features an iceberg, with the unconscious mind residing below the surface and conscious awareness at only the tip of the iceberg. The id is completely submerged, whereas the ego and the superego operate at both unconscious and conscious levels. One shortcoming of this analogy, however, is that it does not represent the dynamics of psychodynamic theory. Specifically, intrapsychic conflict involves the three aspects of personality shifting and applying pressure on each other constantly.
