Description: (a) In normal nerve conduction, sodium ions (Na+) enter the sodium channels along a neuron and allow the neuron to fire (set off an action potential) and conduct an impulse. (b) Local anesthetics (represented by the red x) block the sodium channels. Sodium ions are not able to enter the neuronal membrane through the sodium channels. Therefore, no action potential can be conducted along the nerve.
