Description: Mechanisms of action of antidepressants: (a) In adrenergic and serotonergic neurons the activity of the neurotransmitter is terminated by reuptake. (b) Tricyclic antidepressants and SSRIs produce their effects by inhibiting the reuptake of neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitter accumulates in the synaptic cleft and activates more receptors, thus causing an enhanced effect at the synapse.
