Description: The patellar reflex. (A) Striking the patellar ligament excites the quadriceps muscle spindles.(B) Sensory input travels to spinal cord and synapses with motor neurons and interneurons. (C) Motor neurons send impulses to contract the quadriceps, thus extending the lower leg. (D) Interneurons make inhibitory connections in the ventral horn of the spinal column to prevent hamstrings (antagonist muscles) from contracting so they do not resist the movement.
