Description: (a) In cells that lack a cell wall, such as animal cells, osmosis may promote cell shrinkage (crenation) or swelling. (b) In cells that have a rigid cell wall, such as plant cells, a hypertonic medium causes the plasma membrane to pull away from the cell wall, while a hypotonic medium causes only a minor amount of expansion.
