Description: Flourescence polarization immunoassay. A florescently labeled analyte is excited with polarized light. When the analyte is bound to the antibody, the antibody rotates slowly, and the light is emitted in a polarized fashion. However, if the patient's serum contains the analyte, it competes for the antibody with the labeled analyte. Labeled analyte that is unbound moves freely in solution, so when the fluorochrome attached to it is excited, the emitted light is no longer polarized because of this free movement.
