Description: (a) Varicella zoster virus recurring as shingles, a painful rash limited to an area enervated by 1 or 2 nerves. This occurs in 20% of all people living in the United States. The virus, latent since the original chicken pox infection, is reactivated by age, stress, or being immunocompromised.

(b) Chest x-ray of a child showing pulmonary manifestations of a chicken pox infection. This child was immunocompromised because of leukemia.
