Structure of phosphate ion and hybrid atomic orbitals of phosphate ion

Description: The orthophosphate ion (HPO4-2) which is often abbreviated as Pi (inorganic phosphate), is capable of a wide variety of resonance forms.

Consequently, release of the orthophosphate results in an entropy increase in the system and is therefore favored.

Resonance stabilization applies in all of the phosphate hydrolysis reactions shown previously.
