Description: The protoporphyrin IX is the tetrapyrrole portion of the heme molecule. Heme, which is protoporphyrin IX complexed with Fe(II), is the prosthetic group of hemoglobin and myoglobin. Because of resonance delocalization of the electrons in the porphyrin ring, all N–Fe bonds within the heme are equivalent.
